For almost three hundred years, an elite number of Starfleet officers have dedicated their lives to uphold the security of the Federation so that ordinary citizens could enjoy their civil liberties. These officers are the best of the best within Starfleet Operations and are always first to confront outside aggression, hence their motto: First to Fight! As the Federations spearhead, SWORD makes up the covert tactical arm of THE 300 Special Operations Fleet.
The Special Warfare Operational Reconnaissance Detachment was formed as a specialized subdivision of Starfleet Operations. Originally known as Task Force One, its mandate is to seek out and confront direct threats to the security of Earth; in 2162 the mandate was expanded to include the United Federation of Planets and became known as SWORD.
SWORD Operatives are primarily recruited from Starfleet Officers with direct combat experience and who have Special Forces operations training. Starfleet Academy's Special Operations School teaches SWORD Operatives to incorporate mixed tactics from Earth, Vulcan, Andorian, and Tellarite clandestine organizations. SWORD Task Forces have several specific missions: unconventional warfare, overt warfare, internal defense, special reconnaissance, combating terrorism, and counter-proliferation. Other duties include coalition warfare and support, combat search and rescue (CSAR) of stranded intelligence and first contact teams. SWORD Operatives have participated in nearly every conflict the Federation has been involved in, including: conflicts with the Klingons and Romulans in the 23rd century; the Borg invasion of 2367; the Dominion War of 2373; the Cardassian War of 2375; and the Klingon War of 2405. Without the sacrifices made by SWORD officers in the defense of liberty, the Federation would have fallen during any of these wars. For a majority of the Federation's existence, SWORD operated covertly so as to not draw undue attention for its aggressive tactics. This changed when the USS Voyager disappeared in the Delta Quadrant and Captain Janeway needed an elite team of specialists for hazardous operations. With the success of the Hazard Team, politicians started calling for such units to be activated throughout Starfleet. Starfleet Operations had other ideas and in a closed session of the Federation Council, Admiral Nechayev disclosed the existence of Special Forces units, such as SWORD.
David "Drak" Klein (Human, Male) Status:Federation Tactical Officer, Vice Admiral Starship Registration Series:NX-92001-xx Active Assignment: * MIA * Prior Service:***Classified*** Service Record Summary:
Drak entered Starfleet Academy at the age of 16 and graduated with honors. In 2395 he was promoted to Captain and given command of a Section 31 experimental starship, the USS Pegasus, NX-92001, which he commands to date. Drak's assignments regularly included patrolling the Klingon borderlands and leading skirmishes into enemy sectors. When war officially broke out with the Klingon Empire in 2405, and largely due to his experience and aggressiveness in combat, Admiral Drak was appointed as the Director of SWORD and led THE 300's fleet to victory in numerous battles.
Drak's psychological profile indicates that he is a self-confident, forceful person who knows what he wants and is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. As Drak's victories mounted his collection of captured technology grew and the resulting field upgrades to the USS Pegasus have made it one of the most formidable attack vessels within Starfleet. The same modifications, combined with his command style, have resulted in the Pegasus being more akin to a Klingon warship than a Federation starship. However, Admiral Drak often thinks of his crew as people put under his protection and takes it very personally if something happens to anyone "under his watch". Due to such tendencies, he has been known to take on hazardous missions himself rather than placing his crew in harm's way. Even though Starfleet has objected to his practices on several occasions, they have granted some leeway due to his accomplishments and the knowledge that he has Starfleet's best interests always in mind.
Vice Admiral Drak along with his crew was last seen entering Borg space and the last communication received was from a distress beacon, within it was classified information concerning the Borg which was detrimental to thwarting their incursions into Federation space as well as strategic locations where the Borg where holding captured high ranking Star Fleet officers.
